I prefer to think that reality is just elements. The name we give is just a grouping of the function of the collective atoms for purposes of communication and thinking. If the group of atoms no longer serve its function, it cannot be perceived or classified by the name because the objective of communication and thinking has not been met. It's all about human perceptions... When/if we create superintelligent AI, we would have to program it to learn human associations for things; otherwise, it would make any and all connections between anything and everything, which ruins the point of a neural network. (Without pattern recognition, it couldn't do anything.) But if we allowed it, let's say, 1,000 times as many logical connections between things as we learn and use ourselves, the AI would think much more efficiently--it would just need a better way to communicate. (I remember hearing discussions over the huge barrier in machine to human communication in the AI community.) Random thought: In a way, human-level thought is just a large number of functions that interact with each other.I don't have any experience in the creation of AI, but my thought is this: if we could break down human thought into individual functions, and apt them to interact such as ours, we could theoretically create human-level AI quite plausibly. It would inherently be able to think faster just because our neural interactivity is slower than technology is capable. We obviously could optimise it beyond human capability through giving it: 1. types of sensory inputs we don't have 2. complete symbioses to a duplicate systems 3. giving it innumerable input via the internet (possibly filtering the input through another AI to best meet defined objectives) 4. we could allow it to self-optimize at max speed. (Clearly, there's more to be brought up.)

If God created the universe, then he can decide what constitutes a chair. It's the 'God's game - God's rules'. Without God, chair is one of the many things which loses absolute meaning. Any moral system created in the absence of God's rules, is just an arbitrary system of behavioural guidelines that can only have meaning through subjective collective agreement. This is the problem encountered in a post-god world. With the death of God, objective truth also died.

Well, a chair is the plural of many atoms arranged in a certain way. Ok got it. But an atom is the plural of electrons, protons, and neutrons arranged in a certain way. And P and N are plural of different quarks arranged a certain way. And those quarks are plural to possibly vibrating strings or some other substance. When does it end?

Perception is not reality. Experience is not reality. There is an #1 Objective physical universe and there is our #2 Limited unique sensory Experience of it and there is our #3 Conceptual realm imposed upon our perception. .. 1 Physical Universe - Physical Chair = Matter (energy string waves or atoms) 2 Sensory Experience - Sensory Chair - Relationaly = Item with adequate "chair" features for our "chair" purposes (our relationship with it) 3 Conceptualy realm imposed in our perspective

Hmmm.. 1 = infinity. Let me explain. When you're asleep or half awake, your time perception is very dull and imprecise. However, right before your death, you might experience 1= infinity. Since your dead, your senses are not only dulled but is destroyed, this includes your perception of time. So what if, there WAS a afterlife, but it's entirely in your mind. You have lost the perception of time, your thoughts make your own reality when you are dead. You will live in an eternity best suited for you as your consciousness see fit. So what I'm saying is, what if a second right before your death is your afterlife. You can now control time at your will before death but there is no more death, for one is equals to infinity

A chair is merely a construct created by society to give name to a combination of materials that are put together to provide a place to sit in order to better communicate with other humans. Animals have no concept of chairs because they have no need of them, nor a need to communicate them.

Loved the Allan watts reference at the end. This video has alot in common with his teachings it seems to "me". But I always take it with a grain of salt. I have in no way any authority to connect the ways of looking at the world through a zen and taoistic perspective to what Michael was talking about in the video but it felt like it hit some of the same points. Felt fairly familiar with some of the stuff Alan Watts said in some of the video's you can find on ARstart. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The Japanese concept of "animism" is the way I personally resolve this debate. Animism dictates that every living thing has a "soul". I don't interpret it literally, but as a conceptual tool to rationalize the concept of items being distinct. As soon as we define a thing as something, a new "lifespan" for that thing begins. If someone produced a chair in a factory, that chair would begin its lifespan because the company would refer to it as a chair that it has produced. If I were to then acquire that chair and name it "Bruce", then a second, overlapping lifespan would begin. You can think of these lifespans as "threads of existence". As soon as that chair was destroyed, I would still retain the memories of "Bruce" (Think "Wilson" in Castaway). The thread of its existence as a chair would be cut at the moment of its destruction, but the thread of its existence as Bruce would only end when I either stop thinking of it as Bruce, forget that it exists, or die. In short, _belief in a thing being a thing_ gives that thing it's life. That is the start of its journey, and it only ends when we decide it does. 🤷‍♂️

as someone studying 3d modelling: a mesh does not become a chair until i rename it. An unedited box is a chair if the first thing I did was to rename it. A name is merely a categorization, and in reality the chair is nothing but a series of components arranged in a way that i as the creator have decided to call a chair. And if i stack a bunch of chairs on top of each other and merge them into one polygon and call it "chairs01" i now have a singular chairs. The sanity of the categorization might be questioned, but if it's useful to my particular case i will do it. Thats just categorization having a context. I don't see why the real world is different. Chairs can me made of wildly different materials, but if is useful to call them a chair, we do. If you lose part of a bikini, and go looking for it, it might be more useful to talk about the part than the entire thing. So you call it something else. The atoms that made it up didn't stop existing, but your categorization changed.

Nonsense. The paper and the crane are not two things. It's just a piece of paper folded into the shape of a "crane." One thing. If you crumple up the piece of paper and throw it in the garbage, would that be a "crumple up " and a piece of paper? No. That's just a crumpled up piece of paper... in the garbage. All of these open ended, chase-your-tail-around concepts are largely impractical and for philosophers with not enough actual things to do..

I have to believe may people told you this. I'm too lazy to read all the comments. the crane origami represents a crane. it is not a crane. it's a "picture" of a crane. does your origami eat? does it shit? does it fly? if not, is not crane. you should know that a picture of anything is a representation of the thing, not the actual thing. calling it a bird does not give it the ability to lay eggs. (i was going to say "fly" but "eggs" is better.) i made an origami of an unicorn, now i know unicorns are real. please stop me because i just made an origami of "big foot" and "nessie" and frankie's monster! OMG! origami is the ultimate wish-granter!
